Roadtrip Music

Ok I'm going on a loooooonng plane ride tomorrow (my day will start at 4am and end at an hour much later than midnight if I know Melissa well...) and then I'm going to be in the car for about 6 hours + on Friday.

Lets get some roadtrip music suggestions from my readers. There are lots of you out there reading this, so leave a comment and lets see what you've got.

PS. Here's a picture of where I'm going.

A couple of questions need answering to really answer this. Are you looking for whole albums to put in and let them play through, or a collection of songs to mix together? For the purposes of this post, I'm assuming the mix variety (although I'd be happy to suggest albums as well)

Also, what is your definition of "road-trip music"? Something high-energy (which may eventually burn you out, especially on such a long trip), something more even-keeled, or some mix of the two? Something that you have to turn up and sing along with, or something that can sit in the background and not try to steal the spotlight while you're chatting with friends?

By the way, I'm Sherry (formerly McFarland)'s husband.

In any case, here are a couple of songs to consider.

Format is "Artist - Album - Song".

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - 10 Days Out - The Thrill Is Gone (w/ B.B. King)

Led Zeppelin - II - Living Loving Maid

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking - Jane Says

The Pixies - Death To The Pixies - Here Comes Your Man

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy - Better Man

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits - Last Dance With Mary Jane

Otis Redding - Greatest Hits - Hard To Handle

Paul Oakenfold - Bunkka - Starry Eyed Surprise

INXS - Welcome To Wherever You Are - Beautiful Girl

The Rolling Stones - Forty Licks - Don't Stop

Cake - Comfort Eagle - Short Skirt, Long Jacket

Lenny Kravitz - Greatest Hits - Always On The Run

Green Day - American Idiot - Holiday

Deep Purple - When We Rock We Rock - Hush

R.L. Burnside - Come On In - Let My Baby Ride

Johnny Cash - Unchained - I've Been Everywhere

Van Morrison - Moondance - Into The Mystic

Hootie & the Blowfish - Looking For Lucky - Get Out Of My Mind

Radiohead - The Bends - High and Dry

John Prine - Fair and Square - She Is My Everything

That's probably a lot more than you wanted, but hey, I get a kick out of this kind of thing. I'm just barely getting started, actually. Just ask Sherry; I'm sure I drive her nuts. In any case, I'll finish up with a few (I'll limit to four) album suggestions:

John Prine - Fair and Square
Jim Gaffigan - Beyond the Pale (standup comedy -- amazingly funny and the time will fly)
Kenny Wayne Shepherd - 10 Days Out
Hootie & The Blowfish - Looking For Lucky

Rick, I'm glad you clarified who you are somewhere in the post. I have a few Ricks in my life and I was thoroughly confused at first. :)

Thanks for the great suggestions!! I highly doubt that my new travel companion will want to listen to the local country stations as much as I will. Rock is way more neutral and I can't wait to hear most of this stuff. I'll let you know how it goes.

ok Steph, here's some suggestions:

Anything by The Format
(I can't ever go on a roadtrip without listening to The Format and Jimmy Eat World)

Cat Stevens - Miles from Nowhere
(seeing as how that picture of where you're going looks like it's miles from nowhere.)

The Shins - Young Pilgrims

Guster - Center of Attention, Amsterdam, and Either Way

Incubus - Dig

OK Go - A Million Ways

and if you've never heard of Veda, you might want to check them out. Anything from the album called "The Weight of an Empty Room" is great.
